Family Learning Center

Navajo teachers provide literacy training.

The Resource Center offers information for families interested in reading with their children to promote overall family reading and literacy.

The Center is filled with thought-provoking posters emphasizing the many ways in which literacy affects the community, health, jobs, safety, citizenship, and other everyday issues.

In addition to reading-related posters and decorations, the Resource Center is filled with books for everyone from pre-schoolers through adult ages. Visitors may borrow one book per visit, free of charge. The Resource Center provides child development activities and pre-reading skill building for children who come with their parents.

Reading resources are available at The Gathering Place

Families are encouraged to return as often as they wish for more hands-on experience. Parents also receive information on accident prevention, poison control, and safety which is offered through the health home visiting program of The Gathering Place, called "Shima Yazhi".

In order to provide on-going services to interested groups, families may sign up for scheduled training and support groups which meet in different locations.

The Resource Center welcomes volunteer help and group visits to help promote family literacy. Other community groups have been invited to participate in this project. The site also provides voter registration services.

The Resource Center is open 10:00am - 6:00pm
Monday - Thursday and for special workshops.
